NovaStar Reference / Data Formats / Iridium

Overview

Data from the Iridium Satellite Communications company can be ingested into the NovaStar system.

Data are provided by vendors, which sell Iridium data through data plans. The following table lists vendors that have been used in NovaStar systems.

Iridium Vendor Description
Kore Data packet specification is provided in documentation subject to nondisclosure agreement. HydroLynx hardware can send ALERT2 binary packets via Iridium, resulting in a data push from Iridium that includes Iridium packets surrounding ALERT2 binary. This is implemented using nsrecdata -G iridium-alert2b command parameters. Data packets can also be sent to an email address as a redundant data stream and archive.
Micro Specialties Data are provided in simple text format. Currently nsrecdata is not used to ingest data and instead a script is run on a schedule to query data from a URL and load into NovaStar using nsdataimport.

Standard NovaStar Properties

  • Identifiers used by Iridium and vendors are different than NovaStar station and point identifiers. Data ingest must consider how to handle identifiers, data types, and format.

Limitations

  • Vendors may not provide a way to retrieve historical data. Therefore, a system outage may lose data. Each system must be evaluated to address this issue.

Importing Data into NovaStar

Iridium data are read into NovaStar as of version 5.2.1.0 using the nsrecdata program.

Exporting Data from NovaStar

Data cannot currently be exported from NovaStar to Iridium.
